Singer Songwriter Cat HughesSinger Songwriter Catherine Hughes has enjoyed performing music since the age of 6. Presently, Catherine has put her talents to a good cause; She has internationally distributed over 16,000 copies of her debut CD Coming Home to the American Soldiers stationed around the world. Catherine has dedicated Coming Home to the American soldiers serving our country abroad with aspirations of uplifting their spirits. Catherine’s musical career began at the young age of six with The Little Music Makers. Catherine joined her older sister and two other young instrumentalists in a holiday music group. During the 5 years they were together Catherine played the oboe with The Little Music Makers at over a hundred locations, including Rockefeller center and other various venues in New York and Pennsylvania. The Little Music Makers were featured on ABC's Fast Forward program; and other TV shows, radio stations and newspapers. In 1998, at age 11, Catherine Hughes established and directed Oley’s Music Group. She played her bassoon and oboe, arranged music and had the group play at local spots in Berks County. From 1998-2000 Catherine’s chamber music group was formed to give her freedom to play bassoon and oboe as well as to share music on a volunteer bases. As a freshman, Catherine joined the Hill School in Pottstown Pa, where she became a high school boarding student. Catherine was a member of the Choir and Hill Treble Chorus. In the spring of 2001 she joined the Hill Trebles and Glee club on a tour of England where they had the opportunity to perform in the Salisbury Cathedral and many other venues. Catherine also participated in two school musicals. In 2002, Catherine Hosted the Berks County Music and Arts festival. During her 9-hour performance as an MC there were over 20 different acts ranging from dance to acoustics and drama. Her stage directing and hosting made the event fluid and spontaneous. With her presence and her support on and off stage she encouraged performers perform with confidence. For the past four years from 2000-2004, Catherine has served as host, director and assistant producer of a TV program, Art Expressions, on Berks Community Television. Catherine features young local artists and showcases their work on television and also announces art related news for the general public. She issues press releases to 3 major newspapers so that her show is publicly noted. Art Expressions provides Catherine with the opportunity to share her passion in the arts and encourage aspiring artists to peruse their talents. From 2002-2003 Catherine spent her junior year living abroad in Beijing, China through the Student Year Abroad program. She lived with local Chinese family and attended a Chinese primary School where she learned Mandarin. During her 8 months there, Catherine traveled and performed her music throughout China. In many villages she would sing her songs in Mandarin and English. Catherine trekked through rainforests and to some of the most remote regions in the world. In Beijing Catherine joined the International Festival Chorus conducted by Nicholas Smith for winter and spring performances including the outstanding performance of Handel’s “Messiah” in the Forbidden City. During her junior year abroad Catherine also performed in the chorus of the first Chinese produced Broadway show, Lady in the Dark. The production of Lady in the Dark illustrated a big step the China’s progression towards cultural expansion. The show was featured in many Chinese newspapers, magazines and television shows. In Beijing, Catherine also volunteered at orphanages community functions, and tutored English. The culture, the travel, the monks, the Tai Chi, the Great Wall, the adventure, the friends and the experience have all inspired Catherine’s passion in her music and have opened Catherine’s heart and eyes to the world. In 2003 Catherine composed and recorded her first CD titled: Coming Home with 11 of her original tracks. Coming Home dedicated it to the United States soldiers serving our country around the world. To date, October 2004, over 16,000 copies of Coming Home have been sent to the USA troops living around the world in hopes of supporting and uplifting their spirits. Catherine will continue to donate her music to Americans serving our country, aspiring to send 50,000 of her CD’s to the troops overseas by the 2005 holiday season. In 2004 Catherine composed and recorded her second CD titled: Thinking Of You with 8 more of her original tracks. In 2004 Catherine continues to be recognized by newspapers, magazines and radio stations. She continues to perform at local venues, sends out press releases and endeavors to use media as a voice for her on going cause to support our soldiers. Catherine has started her college education this fall in Boston, at Northeastern University’s International Business College where she will continue her studies in music, Chinese and international affairs. Catherine aspires always to expand and share her passions in music, songwriting, and performing. |
